UN evacuates several employees from Libya over worse situation
According to well-informed sources, 60% of personnel were evacuated
THE UNITED NATIONS, July 09./ITAR-TASS/. The United Nations Organisation has evacuated several employees of this global organisation from Libya due to a deteriorating situation in the country. Spokesperson of the UN general secretary Stephane Dujarric confirmed this news report to ITAR-TASS on Tuesday.
The UN mission on support in Libya temporarily cuts its personnel due to worse security situation in the country, he said, noting that this was a temporary step and it would be revised as long as the security situation improved.
The spokesperson did not specify how many employees of the mission that numbered 205 were evacuated. However, according to well-informed sources, 60% of personnel were evacuated. Available reports said that they were transferred to Italy.
Current crisis in Libya actually continues from the start of “the people’s revolution”, which resulted in the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Rebels coming to power cannot take control of the situation in the county which plunged in feudal strife. Islamic radicals who do not obey to central authorities keep controlling several districts in Libya. Meanwhile, the country turned in the main source of spreading weapons in the region.
Incidents with foreigners occur regularly in Libya. For instance, three engineers from Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia were abducted in the western Libyan city of Zuwara in the previous week. Later first above-mentioned two engineers were released.
