Russian Tour Operators’ Union confirms tourist death in Kenya
The man who shot dead the Russian tourist was detained
MOSCOW, July 6 /ITAR-TASS/. A Russian female tourist was shot dead in Kenya in a robbery attack, spokeswoman of the Russian Tour Operators’ Union Irina Tyurina said on Sunday.
The French news agency France Presse reported on Sunday citing a police report that a Russian female tourist had died in the hospital of Kenya’s port city of Mombasa after an armed assault during a tour of the 16th century Portuguese-built Fort Jesus.
“The Russian tourist who was in the old town died in a robbery attack,” the spokeswoman said.
“A native Kenyan man started to threaten her on the road, trying to take her bag away from her and when he failed to do so he shot her,” Tyurina said.
The man who shot dead the Russian tourist was detained, the spokeswoman said.
It is still unknown whether the Russian tourist had come to Kenya on her own or ordered a tour from a travel agency, the spokeswoman said.
“A large company specializing in the reception of Russian tourists in Kenya has not confirmed that this Russian female citizen was their client,” Tyurina said.
