CHISINAU, July 01. /ITAR-TASS/. Moldova’s parliament will meet for a special session on Wednesday, July 2, to ratify the association agreement with the European Union, parliament speaker Igor Corman told journalists on Tuesday.

Earlier, the Moldovan government approved the document signed by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca in Brussels on June 27. Under Moldova’s current laws, the majority of votes (51 out of 101) are needed for the parliament to ratify the agreement.

Lawmakers with the ruling Coalition of pro-European Government, who have the majority of seats in the parliament, said they would support the agreement. The opposition, which includes Moldova’s biggest Party of Communists, the Socialist Party and the party Vozrozhdenie (Revival) and controls 40% of seats in the parliament, said they were against the association agreement.

Moldova is signing the association agreement with the European Union in the situation when its public opinion is split as to which foreign policy vector should be chosen. In recent referendums in the unrecognized republic of Transdniestria and the Gagauz autonomy, more than 90% of residents voted in favor of closer relations with Russia and seeking membership in the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. Public opinion in the rest of the country, according to opinion polls, has split about fifty-fifty. Notably, the number of those favoring closer ties with the European Union has decreased from 69 to 45% in the past two years.
