Ukraine needs real truce, not cover for force realignment — Duma speaker
The Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had earlier announced the end to the ceasefire in the country’s south-east
MOSCOW, July 01. /ITAR-TASS/. Ukraine needs a real truce, not an operation to cover force realignment, State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin told journalists on Tuesday.
“There is a need for a truce, a real, not apparent one at that. Not an operation to cover the realignment and rearmament of the national army units, but a tangible truce to make a dialogue possible,” said head of the parliament’s lower house. “Dialogue is the only way to save more lives, the only chance to settle this grave conflict.”
The Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had earlier announced the end to the ceasefire in the country’s south-east. He is ready to renew truce if all the sides involved stick to his peace plan, says the president’s website.
Naryshkin said he was surprised at the behavior of some Western politicians who took part in the ongoing OSCE Parliamentary Assembly summer session and PACE session that ended last week. Some delegates, Naryshkin said, behaved strangely. “Usually sensitive to such issues as human rights protection, in particular protection of the right to life, they seem not to notice what is happening in Ukraine, as if the crisis and civil war were going on not in the center of Europe but on some other planet," he noted.
“They do not notice or try not to notice the problem of refugees and doubt the figures,” Naryshkin said. “It is not figures that matter, be it 100,000 or 400,000 refugees. It is important that a huge number of Ukrainians try to save their lives and seek shelter in the neighboring country.”
The politicians ignored the developments, because Ukrainians fled not Russia but to Russia, “fled from their own country’s army”, Naryshkin explained describing the situation as “theatre of the absurd”.
“But much fits together, assuming that players active behind the scenes of this tragedy have no regard for people and want control over the territory, resources and assets,” Naryshkin said. “We believe that it is just impossible to restore peace, justice and order in Ukraine without a truce and dialogue."
