China praises Putin’s revocation request on using troops in Ukraine
Chinese authorities also support the intention of parties to the conflict to implement a ceasefire agreement
BEIJING, June 25./ITAR-TASS/. China has welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative to have parliament’s permission to use the Russian army in Ukraine revoked.
“China has a positive view on Vladimir Putin’s decisions and constructive efforts of parties involved in the Ukrainian crisis,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in Beijing on Wednesday.
“We also support the intention of parties to the conflict to implement a ceasefire agreement,” she said, calling on all parties to seek diplomatic resolution of the Ukrainian crisis “based on agreements reached in Geneva”.
Putin on Tuesday suggested that the Federation Council, the upper house of Russia’s parliament, cancel its resolution authorising use of Russia’s armed forces in Ukraine, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
“In connection with the start of three-party talks on this issue (settlement of the situation in Ukraine’s eastern regions) the head of state submitted to the Federation Council a proposal on cancelation of the Federation Council’s resolution on the use of the armed forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine,” Peskov told ITAR-TASS.
He said Putin, before leaving for Vienna on an official visit on Tuesday, had addressed a letter to Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko.
On Wednesday, the Federation Council cancelled its resolution, with 153 Russian senators voting for this decision and one lawmaker voting against. The decision takes effect from the day of approval.
