EU Commissioner urges Ukraine to offer centralized response to situation and refugees

STRASBOURG, June 20. /ITAR-TASS/. Ukrainian authorities should set up a center for coordinating work with refugees and internally displaced persons in the wake of turbulent events in the east of the country, Nils Muiznieks, the EU Commissioner for Human Rights said Friday summing up the results of his trip to Ukraine, which he made from June 16 through June 19.

The government in Kiev should begin with centralizing the system of registration of refugees and international assistance to them, he said in a statement Friday.

He praised the efforts of nonprofits organizations, volunteers and local authorities, adding however that their endeavors will not be enough as regards the solution of problems of displaced persons, especially women, children and the disabled, many of them suffering the impact was combat operations.

UN data says the number of internally displaced persons fleeing the conflict between government forces and supporters of federalization in the east of Ukraine was about to reach 20,000 people by June 16. Along with it, UN officials admitted that the actual number of internally displaced persons might be around 34,000.

Migration agencies in Russia said earlier that more than 100,000 citizens of Ukraine had fled the military operation conducted in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions by government troops, units of the so-called ‘national guards’ and paramilitary squads of the ultra-rightwing Right Sector militia. They crossed the border over to Russia.

Nils Muiznieks also urged the authorities in Kiev to continue “reforms” of the Interior agencies, the judiciary and the prosecutorial offices. He indicated that it was essential to guarantee efficient investigation of encroachments on human rights in order to rehabilitate institutes of the states.
