DONETSK, June 20./ITAR-TASS/.The Supreme Council of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic has applied to the United Nations for recognition of its sovereignty, deputy chairman of the presidium of the Supreme Council Vladimir Makovich told ITAR-TASS on Friday.

A letter was sent to the United Nations Organization with the request to recognize the republic's independence, he said.

According to Makovich, such letters were sent also to the Serbian and South Ossetian parliaments.

Earlier, on May 19, the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic addressed the United Nations with the same request.
