TAGANROG, June 19. /ITAR-TASS/. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch will monitor the human rights situation in southeast Ukraine, Russian Human Rights Ombudsman Ella Pamfilova told journalists.

“Humanitarian organizations have been very inert so far,” Pamfilova said, adding she had contacted the United Nations representatives dealing with refugees who are planning to come to Russia’s southern Rostov region, which has received thousands of refugees in recent weeks to get acquainted with the situation.

“At long last, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have started monitoring the human rights situation in southeast Ukraine. Regrettably, they have been quite inert in reacting to humanitarian situations,” Pamfilova said.

She said she had asked United Nations representatives to come to the Rostov region to get convinced that there were refugees from southeast Ukraine in its territory.

“Many are simply ignoring the existence of refugees,” Pamfilova said, adding the reaction of Russian people who have revealed their true worth in this situation has been amazing. “We have so many volunteers, so many people who are taking this situation close to heart; who are willing to help and who are giving concrete aid,” the Russian human rights ombudsman went on to say.

Pamfilova hopes that the information provided by the monitoring groups operating in southeast Ukraine will be honest, unbiased and not subject to factors of political expediency.

“They should proceed from the interests of those people who are currently under fire and who are suffering,” the Russian human rights ombudsman stressed.
