TEL-AVIV, June 17./ITAR-TASS/. East Ukraine’s Kharkiv Mayor Gennady Kernes was discharged from hospital Elisha in the Israeli city of Haifa where he was being treated after an assassination attempt and will fly back to Kharkiv on Tuesday, Kernes’ doctor Roman Barak who will fly to Kharkiv together with Kernes told ITAR-TASS.

Meanwhile, the mayor intends to get back to work as quickly as possible upon return to Kharkiv, Kernes told reporters before departure for Kharkiv.

“I want to get back to work as quickly as possible, because I have many plans and I should fulfil them,” Kernes said noting that “My plans are to do everything to make the life in Kharkiv stable and peaceful. I work in local authorities, therefore, my main task is to do everything to make the life in the city and the region stable.”

During the investigation of the assassination attempt on Kernes he noted that “It is very important for him to be fully aware of how the investigation was being conducted,” while he was out of Kharkiv. “As far as I am concerned, this is not investigation, but an imitation of investigation, therefore, I will have quite many questions,” he noted. “I will protect my position from the point of view that everything (parliament-appointed Ukrainian Interior Minister) Arsen Avakov is doing for me personally, if we speak eye-on-eye, all this is falsification,” the Kharkiv mayor added.

The Kharkiv mayor got a back gunshot wound in the murder attempt in late April. His breast was broken and internal organs were damaged. Overnight to April 29 Kernes, 54, was brought to clinic Elisha in Israel. He was moved to Haifa chief hospital Rambam later to undergo a complicated ten-hour surgery of the spine and vitals on April 30. After the surgery he was transferred for rehabilitation to clinic Elisha again.

Kernes’ right leg has fully recovered and left leg function was restored up to the knee in the recuperation course in Israel, Barak said. The Kharkiv mayor already can walk independently with plaster splints, but he left the hospital in the wheeling chair, Barak noted.

“The forecast is positive,” the Israeli doctor of the Kharkiv mayor said. In his words, Kernes’ wounded vitals are also recovering.
