“Russia’s initiatives on the settlement in Ukraine are blocked by the Western states,” he says

MOSCOW, June 16./ITAR-TASS/. The West’s opposition to Russia’s initiative in the UN Security Council makes a decision on no-fly zones over Ukraine impossible, Russian experts say.

They spoke within a roundtable meeting devoted to the special operation in Ukraine’s southeast on Monday.

“Such decisions are taken by the UN Security Council,” president of the Russian Association for International Law Anatoly Kapustin said on Monday.

“We see the situation in the Security Council: Russia’s initiatives on the settlement in Ukraine are blocked by the Western states,” he said.

“We’re surprised by certain Western states’ reaction to the Ukrainian events. Such policy of double standards is inhumane and unlawful. The US and the EU have to take measures sooner or later if the conflict in Ukraine drags on,” Kapustin said.

Discussions also focused on the detention of Russian journalists in Ukraine. “Journalists have a special status. They are protected by international law. Their detention is among such provocations as the attack on the Russian Embassy,” the head of Moscow Institute of International Relations’ Department of International Law, Alexei Moiseev said.

“The statements by acting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsia go beyond the bounds of decency,” he said.

“Many international conventions are violated. The Ukrainian authorities are not going to hold talks with militiamen,” Moiseev said.
