Karachi airport completely cleared of militants

NEW DELHI, June 09. /ITAR-TASS /. Pakistan's Special Forces control the Jinnah airport in Karachi, that was attacked by militants, a representative of the law enforcement agencies Sibtain Rizvi said.

“The attack is over and we have cleared the area of all militants. We will hand over the airport to the Civil Aviation Authority at 7:00 GMT”, Rizvi said.

At least 14 people and 10 militants had been killed in the attack on the Jinnah earlier.

The attack was an act of retaliation of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group for its late leader Hakimullah Mehsud, who was killed in a US drone strike in November 2013.The information about it contained in the message the TTP released in the Pakistani media.

In the message, the TTP claimed that the attack in Karachi was planned long before the implementation, but it was postponed because of the peace talks between the TTP and the Pakistani authorities.

A dialogue between the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the TTP began in February 2014, but the Taliban declared the end of the truce in April.

Earlier, Major General of the Pakistan armed forces Rizwan Akhtar said that all the attackers were ethnic Uzbeks.
