German Chancellor said she first of all wanted to discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin “cooperation with the elected president of Ukraine,” Petro Poroshenko

BRUSSELS, June 05. /ITAR-TASS/. The West seeks the settlement of the situation in Ukraine through talks with Russia and diplomatic contacts, not through threats, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a news conferencefollowing a G7 summit in Brussels.

The G7 nations “have a common point of view on the situation in Ukraine,” the chancellor said, adding that a third package of sanctions would be imposed only if talks with Moscow failed.

Merkel said she first of all wanted to discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin “cooperation with the elected president of Ukraine,” Petro Poroshenko. “The Ukrainian people have chosen a new president, but the country’s problems have not yet been solved, and a lot must be done,” she added.

She also said they would discuss moves to be made to achieve peace in the east of Ukraine. Russian gas deliveries to Europe will also be in the focus of attention, the chancellor added.
