The elections “cannot be considered as 100% perfect from the standpoint of democratic standards, but Russian observers note the elections were held “in a fair atmosphere”, FM says

MOSCOW, June 05. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesman has said the attempts to disrupt Syria's presidential elections failed.

Bashar Assad won a convincing victory in the presidential elections, the ministry's spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday.

"According to reports from Syria, observers note that the elections were held in a fair, free and transparent atmosphere," he said.

In the current conditions, the elections “cannot be considered as 100% perfect from the standpoint of democratic standards,” Lukashevich said.

“But Russian observers have made a clear conclusion. We have no grounds to put into question the legitimacy of the elections,” he added.

“I believe that Syria’s president-elect has all powers to form a government, but it is hard to say anything about its composition. I presume that there will be some new personalities, including those from the moderate opposition. In any case, the formation of a government is a sovereign right of the authorities,” the diplomat said.

“We shall be prepared to work with any Cabinet that may be formed,” he said.
