DAMASCUS, June 04. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia believes that Syria has proven its worth as a democratic state ruled by law, the head of Russian observers at the presidential elections in Syria said assessing the meeting of international observers in Damascus on Wednesday.

“We recognise the elections as legitimate and Russia will do everything possible to support the statehood ruled by law in the Syrian Arab Republic,” said Alexei Alexandrov, who is also first deputy of the Russian Federation Council’s committee on constitutional legislation and state construction.

The lawmaker also said that “Russia has already done a lot to freeze vicious schemes against Syria, leading even to the country’s destruction,” and that it would protect rightful interests of the Syrian people further on.

In the final communique on Syria’s presidential elections, the observers confirmed that the elections had been held in strict accordance with democratic norms and they called on the world community to recognise the outcome unequivocally.

Along with this, the communique strongly condemns the ban imposed by the Lebanese Interior Ministry on Syrian refugees, which prevented them from casting their votes in the elections.
