Obama to meet with Poroshenko in Warsaw on Wednesday
WARSAW, June 04. /ITAR-TASS/. US President Barack Obama is due to meet with Ukraine's President-elect Pyotr Poroshenko here on Wednesday. Nothing has been reported about venue or time of talks. According to existing information, the meeting will be held on Wednesday morning.
Obama, who arrived here on Tuesday for a visit, in his remarks repeatedly spoke about Ukraine. He said the USA intended to support it, economically as well. Besides, the American leader went on record in favor of stabilization of the situation in Ukraine's east. There must be a mechanism to restore order in that country's eastern regions, he said. Obama's opinion is that Russia must use its influence to bring about stabilization of the situation in Ukraine.
The US president said that at the forthcoming meeting with Poroshenko in Warsaw he would like to speak with him about Ukraine's needs and hear from him what, in his view, would be most effective.
Poroshenko arrived in Warsaw on Tuesday at the invitation of his Polish counterpart Bronislaw Komorowski. On the same day, he attended a ceremonial dinner with the participation of the Heads of State and Government on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the first partially free elections to the Polish parliament.
A source at Ukraine's Embassy to Poland told Itar-Tass that Poroshenko's program also provides for talks with Komorowski, the presidents of France, Finland, and Austria, Francois Hollande, Sauli Niinisto, and Heinz Fischer, as well as US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Poroshenk won a victory at the early presidential elections in Ukraine on May 25. According to the Central Election Commission, he polled 54.7% of the vote. His inauguration is scheduled for June 7. Before that he is to meet once againt with many a European leader, as well as with the US President during festivities marking the 70th anniversary of the Allied landing in Normandy. The ceremonies are to take place on June 6 on the Atlantic coast of France.
