Abkhazian ex-president should be given security guarantees — authorities

Abkhazia’s President Alexander Ankvab has tendered his resignation

SUKHUM, June 02. /ITAR-TASS/. Abkhazia’s Acting President Valery Bganba considers it necessary to give security guarantees to the republic’s ex-president Alexander Ankvab.

“It’s the parliament that will decide on this issue,” Bganda said at a news briefing on Monday.

“We talked about it earlier,” he added.

Bganba said Ankvab had left the Russian base in Gudauta. Ankvab is currently at his home in the village of Lykhny, Gudauta District, he said.

“I’ll demand the prosecutor general resign,” Bganba said, adding, “The deputy prosecutor general will carry out his duties.”

“There is no sensce to appoint a new candidate three months before the presidential elections,” he said.

Earlier Abkhazia’s President Alexander Ankvab has tendered his resignation. Valery Bganba will be Abkhazia's acting president.

“For considerations of preserving stability in the country, I am tendering my resignation as Abkhazian President, in line with article 65 of the country’s constitution,” Ankvab said in his address to the people on Sunday. “I call on people to keep calm, to preserve civil peace and to hold the new elections in a normal atmosphere."

According to Ankvab, the consequences of what is now going on in Abkhazia might be ruinous for the country.
