SHANGHAI, May 26. /ITAR-TASS/. A closing ceremony of Russian-Chinese naval drills Joint Sea 2014 was held in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai on Monday.

On Monday, Shanghai residents visited Varyag missile cruiser, flagship of Russia’s Pacific Fleet, and were taken on a tour of the ship by Russian naval sailors.

On Monday afternoon, Russian warships which participated in naval war games will start a crossing to their permanent base. Their farewell ceremony will be held at the mooring at the city of Shanghai.

Supervisors of the military exercises from both countries had a meeting devoted to broadening and development of Russian-Chinese naval co-operation.

On Sunday, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Vice-Admiral Alexander Fedotenkov who commanded the drills from Russia told reporters that Russia and China began to select a region for future naval drills.

“We have already begun to analyze fulfillment of all tasks of military exercises to prepare for next drills next year,” Fedotenkov said, noting that “a thorough survey of the military exercises” was conducted and proposals were prepared “for approval by the leadership of Armed Forces of Russia and China” to develop ties in the next year.

A grouping of Pacific Fleet’s warships comprising of guards missile cruiser Varyag, destroyer Bystry, big anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleev, big assault landing ship Admiral Nevelskoy, tanker Ilim and sea-going tugboat Kalar arrived in China for joint naval exercises on May 18. A total of six surface ships and support vessels, two helicopters and a marine commando unit from Russia and six warships from China are involved in war games.

First military exercises Joint Sea were held in the Yellow Sea near the city of Qingdao in the east Chinese province of Shandong on April 22-27, 2012. A total of 25 warships and submarines, 13 warplanes, nine helicopters and two commando units participated in those war games.

Eighteen ships of the two countries took part in second military exercises Joint Sea which were held in Peter the Great Bay in the Sea of Japan (the East Sea) on July 5-12, 2013.
