DONETSK, May 22. /ITAR-TASS/. The Supreme Council of the self-proclaimed east Ukraine’s Donetsk People’s Republic decided to ask Russia to recognise independence of the republic. The decision was taken unanimously at an extraordinary meeting of the republican Supreme Council in the city of Donetsk on Thursday.

Chairman of the Donetsk republican Supreme Council Denis Pushilin read an address to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the State Duma parliament lower house, Foreign Ministry and the Federation Council parliament upper house, ITAR-TASS reported.

The parliament of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic also has decided to ask Russian recognize the republic’s independence.

Earlier, the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions held referendums on May 11, in which most voters supported independence from Ukraine. After the plebiscite, co-chairman of the Donetsk People’s Republic Denis Pushilin said the DPR asked Russia to adopt it as a constituent member. But the Russian Foreign Ministry had no information on whether Moscow has received an official request from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) to become part of Russia.
