EU seeks Russia-Ukraine good relationship — Van Rompuy
BERLIN, May 21. /ITAR-TASS/. The European Union does not intend to expand its influence on Ukraine, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said.
The EU has no geopolitical ambitions, he told the Rheinishche Post Daily on Wednesday.
Otherwise Brussels would not link the signing of the Association Agreement with the need to carry out reforms in Ukraine, Van Rompuy said.
The European Union wants such countries as Ukraine to maintain good relations with Russia, he said, adding that Moscow should not prevent Kiev from developing contacts with the EU.
If Russia refuses to contribute to deescalation in Ukraine, the West will impose new sanctions, Van Rompuy said.
He also said the EU would sign the Association Agreements with Georgia and Moldova at the upcoming summit in June.
