NEW DEHLI, May 15. /ITAR-TASS/. A ferry with 200 passengers onboard has sunk in the Meghna river in central Bangladesh, the online version of The Daily Star reported on Thursday.

To date, bodies of 6 victims have been found.

The fate of other passengers remains unknown.

Such accidents are quite often in Bangladesh, where the ships’ owners and passengers ignore basic safety rules. The major part of similar ferries is often overloaded. Each year, several hundreds of people die in similar accidents.

In addition, water transport is one of the main in this country, the major part of which (up to 70%) each year results flooded after monsoon rainfalls and cyclones.

The last time such an accident happened in February 2013, when after a ferry crashed with a barge in Meghna river 19 people died.

The biggest ferry crash in Bangladesh

One of the biggest catastrophes took place in July 2003, when ferry Nasreen 2 sank in the place of confluence of rivers Padma, Meghna and Dakatia.

As a result, 500 people of the 800 passengers died. The crash was caused by the ferry’s overloading.
