MOSCOW, May 14. /ITAR-TASS/. The United Nations and Arab League special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, has exerted every effort to settle the Syrian crisis, but very little depended on him in the current difficult situation in the Syrian Arab Republic, the chairman of the National Council of the Damascus Declaration Abroad, Mahmoud al-Hamza, told ITAR-TASS on Wednesday.

“Brahimi made great efforts to reach a political settlement of the Syrian crisis, but he failed in the long run,” al-Hamza said. “I would like to note that the current regime in Syria has often attacked Brahimi, claiming that he was on the side of the opposition and did not act as a mediator.”

“The main thing in Brahimi’s activity was that he worked with great patience and endured these attacks both from the Syrian government and the opposition, which also took place,” he said. “It was certainly a very difficult task for him.”

“Brahimi’s greatest achievement was the convening of the Geneva conference,” al-Hamza said. “He managed to gather at the negotiating table the Syrians representing different parties to the conflict. Unfortunately, the conference produced no results. It only showed that the Syrian authorities played for time and did not take the peace-making task seriously.”

“Very little depended on Brahimi already,” he added. “The Syrian authorities act in their own way. They do not believe in political settlement and try to resolve the crisis by military means.”

Lakhdar Brahimi finally announced his resignation on Tuesday, expressing regret for his inability to forge a coherent international response to the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Brahimi would leave the post on May 31, 2014, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday.
