Party of Regions faction presses for probe into Maidan murders
KIEV, May 14. /ITAR-TASS/. The Party of Regions’ faction in the Verkhovna Rada demands setting up two temporary investigation commissions to look into political persecutions as well as in the killings on Kiev’s Independence Squaer (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) on February 20, faction chairman Oleksandr Yefremov told reporters on Wednesday.
He said setting up a commission to look into political persecutions had been put on the Wednesday’s agenda, but at its very end. “Perhaps on purpose, to have no time left for considering it,” he said.
He sees the probe into the snipers shooting on Maidan even more important. “Unfortunately, the government has done everything possible to prevent the issue of this temporary investigation commission from being submitted to the parliament. In my opinion, it is a crime of the government against the society,” the politician said.
“On one of these days, deputy Gennady Moskal said the commission he led that had looked into the killings came to the conclusion that officers from the Berkut special police force and police officers had not taken part at all and could not have shot,” he said.
“Then the question to the present authorities emerges - who was giving orders and why police officers were killed along with civilians on Maidan? Who are the murderers? These are the questions that must be answered. And until the society gets the answer, people will always have suspicions,” Yefremov said.
