Election of Ukraine President in Odessa region may go wrong, commissions not ready
People refused to work because they are under apprehension of theirs life after the tragic events of May 2
ODESSA, May 13. /ITAR-TASS/. Presidential elections in Ukraine scheduled for May 25 in the Odessa region were threatened because of the unwillingness of the majority of electoral commissions. The head of the regional organization of the Committee of Ukraine Voters (CVU) Anatoliy Boyko told reporters. According to him, most of the electoral commissions in Kotovsk, Ananyev, Artsiz, Izmail and other localities did not even hold its first meeting a few days before the vote.
"A lot of commission members refused to work because they are under apprehension of theirs life after the tragic events of May 2. Not even all commissions could to get in the premises, dead heads were identified, it means people did not know that they were included in the commissions," Boyko said. According to him, many commissions have to be completed by half.
Riots in the city of Odessa broke out in the afternoon on May 2, when football fans arriving from the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkov, Right Sector radicals and representatives of the so-called “Maidan self-defence” from Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, staged a march on city streets. At this action nationalist radicals stirred up clashes with federalisation supporters, setting on fire a tent camp on Kulikovo Field Square where a sign-up campaign was on for a referendum on Ukraine’s federalisation and granting a state language status to the Russian language. Activists and city residents on duty at the tent camp have taken a shelter at the House of Trade Unions which attackers had also set on fire that resulted in massive deaths.
