The council’s decision may be challenged at court

RIGA, April 7. /ITAR-TASS/. A decision made by Latvia's National Council for Electronic Media that controls the activity of TV and radio broadcasters to suspend the broadcasting of Russia’s TV channel Rossiya RTR has come into force on Monday.

After analyzing the contents of Rossiya RTR between March 2 and March 17, the council made a conclusion that the TV channel’s programs contained information violating several articles of the law on electronic media. In addition, the watchdog ruled that in some reports about the situation in Ukraine, Rossia RTR broadcasts biased information with signs of military propaganda.

The council’s decision may be challenged at court.

In addition, on the previous week the same watchdog initiated an administrative case against Russian-speaking First Baltic Channel (PBK). The claims, according to the council, are also linked to the fact that the TV channel for a long time has been broadcasting one-sided, misleading information and reports that are hostile towards Latvia, which may be considered as task-oriented aggression in the country’s media scene.

Up to 70% of broadcasting time of PBK accounts to programs of Russia’s Channel One.
