Austrian Foreign Minister against Ukraine’s admittance to NATO
Instead of NATO membership, Ukraine should seek a non-aligned role or even neutrality, Sebastian Kurz believes
BERLIN, March 27. /ITAR-TASS/. Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz has spoken against a possibility of Ukraine’s getting membership of NATO.
Ukraine’s accession to NATO might become a provocation for Russia, he told Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk radio.
Instead of NATO membership, Ukraine should seek a non-aligned role or even neutrality, while the mentality pegged to political blocks could split the countries like Ukraine or Moldova, Kurz said.
He indicated that the EU is offering a prospect to Ukraine in the form of an Association Agreement, but the AA should be aimed to hamper Russia because it would prop up the block-pegged mentality otherwise.
It is important to find an option that would allow Ukraine to cooperate with the EU and Russia in the long term. A list of these options includes the idea of a free trade zone, among other things, Kurz said.
