BUCHAREST, March 19. /ITAR-TASS/. Brussels should outline clear-cut prospects for Moldova’s accession to the European Union, President Nicolae Timofti said on Wednesday following the meeting with Romanian colleague Traian Basescu, in the city of Iasi, Romania, where they discussed regional security amid Ukrainian events.

“We are asking to outline distinct prospects for Moldova’s accession to the EU, since this is out chief goal,” said Timofti. Chisinau, he added, “has fulfilled all necessary requirements to sign the EU association agreement and now hopes for support of Brussels”.

“The European Union cannot linger, it has made the same mistake with Ukraine. I think the events there will encourage European countries to make positive decisions about Moldova,” believes Basescu.

The sides also discussed cooperation in energy and education, namely chances of faster construction of the 43-kilometer long Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline that will connect Moldova to Romanian gas transportation network and high-voltage power lines across the border. These projects are being implemented with the EU support, and the two leaders have agreed to establish an intergovernmental commission to accelerate the process.

Currently, Moldova’s sole gas supplier is Russian gas export monopoly Gazprom, while Romania’s own resources suffice to provide for 80% of its needs; the shortage is also purchased from Gazprom.
