EU urges to investigate cases of people killed by snipers in Kiev
"There’s a stronger and stronger understanding that it was not [President Viktor] Yanukovych who stood behind the snipers — it was somebody from the new coalition," Estonian FM Urmas Paet said
BRUSSELS, March 07. /ITAR-TASS/. The European Union wants a probe into reports about killing of people by snipers in Kiev, EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton's press secretary Maja Kocijancic said on Friday.
An investigation must be conducted into the violence and murders, and those guilty must be brought to justice, she said in reply to the question of a reporter about the EU's attitude to the fact that snipers who killed people on Independence Square supposedly could be hired by the opposition.
On March 5, a telephone talk between Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet and the EU’s Ashton was made public in the Internet. In the leaked audio, the Estonian minister tells her that people on both sides, policemen and demonstrators, were killed by the same snipers. Paet says a doctor identified only as Olga had told him on a visit to Kiev that snipers may have come from the opposition. "So that there is now stronger and stronger understanding that behind the snipers it was not Yanukovich, but it was somebody from the new coalition," he said, referring to the former opposition to deposed President Viktor Yanukovich.
