TIRASPOL, March 05. /ITAR-TASS/. Transdniestria will tighten control over its air space as Moldova is stepping up its cooperation with NATO. On Wednesday, the parliament of the self-proclaimed republic asked President Yevgeny Shevchuk to support this initiative, Shevchuk's press service reported.

"Moldova's stepping up cooperation with NATO bodies leads to erosion of the republics' constitutional neutrality and puts Transdniestria's security under threat," the parliament said.

It called for "consolidating state bodies' efforts towards working out the measures to secure control of air space in accordance with principles of international law and provisions of the law on the state border of Transdniestria."

From the point of view of international law, Moldova controls the air space of the breakaway Transdniestria. Earlier, Tiraspol authorities planned to rebuild one of the airfields, but Chisinau did not back the idea. Tensions developed in bilateral relations after Moldova's decision to set up migration posts on the administrative border with Transdniestria, at EU recommendations.

At that time, Tiraspol accused Chisinau of building a full-fledged border along the Dniestr and in May 2013, Transdniestria authorities passed a law of their own on state border and its protection.

At present, Transdniestria's air space is monthly traversed by 1,250 aircraft on seven international routes.
