India finds first trials of first power unit of Kudankulam NPP successful
India plans to build 19 power units of the nuclear power plant with a total 17,400 MW capacity before 2017
NEW DELHI, February 11. /ITAR-TASS/. Trials are going on successfully at first power unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant, which is the main project in Russian-Indian nuclear cooperation, situated in State Tamil Nadu in southern India, a source close to the Indian nuclear power corporation told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.
“Trials of equipment and power unit systems at 75% of reactor capacity continue successfully at first unit of the nuclear power plant,” he noted, recalling that first connection of the power unit to the power grid was made on October 22, 2013, the power unit was put at 50% of capacity last December and at 75% of capacity last January.
India plans to build 19 power units of the nuclear power plant with a total 17,400 MW capacity before 2017, eight power units will be built with participation of other countries. Notably, the project envisages construction of third and fourth power units of Kudankulam nuclear power plant at 1,000 MW capacity each with Russia’s technical assistance.
Meanwhile, second power unit of Kudankulam plant is almost finalised. “All project parameters and physical features are proved. Works are being done under strict control of our regulating body in this sphere,” he noted.
In 2010 Russia and India have signed a roadmap plan, which envisages construction of up to 14-16 nuclear power units on Russian projects.
Kudankulam nuclear power plant will provide with electric power supplies not only the state Tamil Nadu, but also whole southern India.
