European Commission does not confirm readiness to delegate mediators to Ukraine
However, Catherine Ashton gave the assurances that Europe was going to delegate high-level mediators to the talks between the opposition and the authorities
BRUSSELS, February 05. /ITAR-TASS/. European Commission does not confirm the readiness to delegate mediators to the talks between the government and the opposition, an official spokesman for the commission said Wednesday commenting on a statement that Vitali Klitschko, a leading Ukrainian oppositionist, made in Kiev earlier in the day after a meeting with the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Baroness Catherine Ashton.
The spokesman told a news conference in Brussels he could not confirm Klitschko’s claims.
“We discussed the situation in Ukraine and the main thing now is to make practical steps towards resolution of the crisis,” Klitschko said. “I pointed out on my part the parliament must adopt an act on reverting to the Constitution of 2004, as the motion will help de-monopolize state power in the country.”
“As for the talks with President (Viktor) Yanukovich, Baroness Ashton gave the assurances that Europe was going to delegate high-level mediators to the talks between the opposition and the authorities,” he said.
