GENEVA, January 31. /ITAR-TASS/. The second round of inter-Syrian talks will be launched in Geneva on February 10, U.N./LAS Special Envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said on Friday.

The opposition agreed with the date, Brahimi said, adding that the government delegation said it wanted to hold consultations with Damascus.

Progress at the inter-Syrian talks is very slow, but the process has been launched, Brahimi said after the first round of Geneva talks.

The Syrian government and the opposition have sit down to one negotiating table for the first time to discuss steps towards terminating the war in Syria, Brahimi said.

The parties agreed that it was necessary to put an end to the Syrian people’s sufferings. They called for implementing the Geneva Communiqué, the U.N. official said.

However, he stressed that the parties’ approaches towards the settlement of the situation differed considerably.

Brahimi said the Syrian parties had consented to guarantee Syria’s territorial integrity.

Answering a question if the government delegation can arrive, the U.N. special envoy replied that they said they would arrive.

In the meantime, he did not rule out that the delegations might be expanded by the second round of talks.

Taking into account the situation in Syria, it was difficult to imagine that those who represented the opposition would arrive in Geneva, Brahimi said.

The Syrian opposition decided to take part in the Geneva forum at the last moment, the U.N. special envoy said, adding that he thought the delegations would be expanded.

The U.N. has no chance to influence membership of the delegations, Brahimi said.
