Sudanese government to investigate assault on Russian diplomat

MOSCOW, January 29. /ITAR-TASS/. Sudanese authorities will do a thorough investigation of this week’s assault on the Russian consul in Khartoum and will take all the steps necessary to assure security of the Russian embassy and its staff, Sudan’s ambassador in Moscow Omar Dahab said Wednesday.

He said it in the course of a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who is President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to the Middle East.

“The Sudanese ambassador expressed regret about the incident when an unknown person attacked Russian Consul in Sudan Andrei Taramayev and his wife and gave them several knife wounds,” the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

The ministry also said it recommended Russian institutions and companies in Sudan to ensure security of the staff due to the attack on the Russian consul.

“We urge Russian citizens to avoid dangerous crime-prone areas,” the ministry said.

“Due to the non-easy situation in Sudan and the sub-region as a whole the Russian Foreign Ministry recommends Russian institutions and companies working in the country to work out measures for ensuring the staff’s security. We urge Russian citizens to avoid terrorist and criminal vulnerable areas,” the ministry said.
