BANGKOK, January 28. /ITAR-TASS/. Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday has turned down the election commission’s proposal to defer elections to the country’s National Assembly (parliament) from February 2 to a later date.

The option of postponing elections has been discussed on a meeting between Thai acting PM and the election commission leadership. The opposition strives for cancellation of the elections. As one of the meeting’s participants told journalists in confidence, the election commission offered to postpone the polls for 3 or 4 months. However, Yingluck Shinawatra declined this proposal.

Earlier, the Cabinet head’s office reported that Shinawatra proposed to the election commission to postpone the voting “only in troubled precincts”. As such, she labeled those precincts where not a single candidate has been registered due to opposition’s pressure and where oppositionists sabotaged the straw vote January 26.

The meeting took place in the Army Club in Bangkok. About five hundred opposition supporters gathered at the club’s gates.
