Crimean legislature speaker dismisses media claims on Crimea’s self-determination

Self-determination of our autonomous republic is off the agenda today - official

KIEV, January 24. /ITAR-TASS/. Speaker of legislature of Ukraine’s Autonomous Republic of the Crimea, Vladimir Konstantinov, has dismissed the reports in a number of mass media on self-determination of the insular region as provocative assertions.

“A number of mass media have circulated a report on Crimea’s self-determination but this is a sheer provocative step,” Konstantinov said. “Self-determination of our autonomous republic is off the agenda today and we’re talking about support to legitimate centralized agencies of power and, in the first place, the Office of the President, which is the only institute capable of keeping the country’s integrity and security.”

“I hope this country will pull out of the current crisis and Crimea will get bigger powers in the united Ukrainian state,” the press service of the Crimean legislature quoted Konstantinov as saying.

Presidium of the legislature endorsed an appeal to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich, the Council for National Security and Defense, and deputies of the country’s Verkhovna Rada “to put an end to the spread of lawlessness, anarchy and violence that have swept the country and to introduce a state of emergency here.
