Ban Ki-moon: Syrian people have key responsibility for their country's future
The UN head recalled that the Geneva communiqué of June 30, 2012 presupposed a number of steps for the formation of a transitional government in Syria
MONTREUX (Switzerland), January 22. /ITAR-TASS/. The Syrian people have the key responsibility for determining the future of their country, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at an international conference on Syria, Geneva II, on Wednesday.
He said Syrians themselves had the prime responsibility for determining the country’s future, putting an end to the conflict and the beginning of the mutual conciliation process. All the participants in Geneva II and other states should support these efforts.
The UN head recalled that the Geneva communiqué of June 30, 2012 presupposed a number of steps for the formation of a transitional government in Syria with full powers, created with the general consent, including the armed forces, security agencies and other bodies.
The communiqué stipulates that the state institutions must be reserved, restored and meet the modern human rights standards, Ban said, urging the conference participants to provide support to Syria in achieving these goals.
