MONTREUX, January 22. /ITAR-TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called for involving the patriotic opposition inside Syria into the inter-Syrian talks.

Speaking at the Geneva II Peace Conference on Wednesday, Lavrov said, “The Geneva Communiqué and U.N. Security Council Resolution 2118 imply that all groups of the Syrian society should have an opportunity to be involved in the national dialogue.”

“However, patriotic opposition groups, which are acting inside Syria and showing interest in taking part in the Geneva II forum, are not involved in the process,” the Russian minister said, adding “I believe that the situation should be corrected by involving them in the talks.”

“Moscow hopes that our LAS partners realize this task,” he said.

“The same fully applies to the need of involving Iran in our joint efforts on implementing the Geneva communiqué without attempting to make a certain interpretation of it,” Sergei Lavrov said.

“The essence of this document is that questions of Syria’s future should be decided on the basis of mutual assent of the government and the opposition,” he underlined.

The Russian minister acknowledged that the starting inter-Syrian talks would be “neither easy, nor quick”.

“There are many forces that verbally backed Geneva II, but in the event do not want it to succeed,” he noted. “However, the conference gives not a 100%, but still a real chance to achieve peace in Syria.”

“In case it is accomplished, it would became a benefit not only for the neighborly Syrian people, and would help invigorate the overall situation in the region and the international climate at large, strengthen the principles of fair and equal partnership in global affairs,” head of Russia’s Foreign Ministry pointed out.

He added that Russia “is ready together with everybody to help the work of Syrian parties on negotiating mutually acceptable accords”.

“Our common task is to achieve stopping the tragic conflict in Syria that brings countless disasters and suffering to the Syrian people and destroys the land,” Lavrov said. “It is impermissible that the tempest wave reach the neighboring countries, all the Middle East region that overcomes the hardest period of its history.”
