UN says Iran will stay away from int’l conference on Syria in Montreux

UNITED NATIONS, January 21, 1:45 /ITAR-TASS/. Iran will not take part in the international conference on Syria in Montreux, Switzerland, as it does not share the common the understanding of principles of the Syrian conflict settlement underpinning the Geneva communique, Martin Nesirky, the official spokesperson for the UN Secretary General said Monday.
He said the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon continued calling on Iran to join the global consensus, which the Geneva communique enjoyed.
Considering Iran’s decision to stay outside this shared common understanding, Secretary Ban decided that the one-day meeting in Montreux would be held without Iran, Nesirky said.
Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Mohammad Khazai said Monday Teneran did not accept any preconditions for its participation in the forum and if its presence there was preconditioned by the acceptance of the Geneva communique, then it would abstain from the Geneva-2 conference.
