KIEV, January 20 /ITAR-TASS/. Vitaly Klichko, the leader of Ukraine’s opposition party UDAR (the Ukrainian Alliance for Democratic Reforms) has left for a meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich to demand that he stop police standoff with the protesters.

“I am going to Yanukovich personally to ask him to intervene and stop the police-protesters confrontation,” Klichko told his supporters.

“Stop the war against Ukrainian citizens. People have been calling on you to hear their demands for two months. Take away the militia and the Berkut anti-riot unit from the streets,” Klichko stressed.

He believes that the only way out of this situation is to hold early parliamentary and presidential elections.

Klichko also called on the policemen to take the side of the people.

“You are supposed to protect your people rather than attack them,” Klichko emphasized.
