Russian money taking Syrian chemical weapons to elimination site

Russia has decided to assist in contributing to the UN Foundation to enable measures necessary to transfer chemical weapons from storage facilities in Syria to platforms for further destruction

KIZNER, December 20. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia will transfer $2 million to the United Nations Foundation to pay for the delivery of Syrian chemical weapons to the elimination site, said Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade specialist Viktor Kholstov.

“Russia has decided to assist in contributing to the UN Foundation to enable measures necessary to transfer chemical weapons from storage facilities in Syria to platforms for further destruction,” he said in the republic of Udmurtia, where a Russian disposal facility was opened on Thursday.

Kholstov said that detoxification would be carried out under the supervision of international inspectors. The first stage of elimination, including destruction of equipment, had been implemented “using methods and technologies provided by Russia and its specialists”.
