Thai Prime Minister to remain at her post until new government formed after elections
"I will continue to support the democratic mechanisms," Shinawatra said
BANGKOK, December 17. /ITAR-TASS /. Acting Prime Minister of Thailand Yingluck Shinawatra does not intend to leave her post before the new government is formed in compliance with the results of preliminary election to the National Assembly (the country’s parliament). This Shinawatra announced on Tuesday after a cabinet meeting.
“I came (to the government — ITAR-TASS NB) through democratic elections. And I will continue to support the democratic mechanisms,” Shinawatra said.
Earlier, the leader of the street protesters Suthep Thaugsuban said he didn’t oppose general democratic elections, but only after a major political reform. Such reform, according to Thaugsuban’s estimates, may take 12-18 months.
On Tuesday, the opposition visited the Election Committee of Thailand and handed a petition to the country’s leadership to postpone the election. A small group of protesters also holds its meeting near the Election Committee. Manifestations on the streets of Bangkok expressing protest against Shinawatra’s Cabinet last for more than 40 days.
December 9, the King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej approved a decree to dissolve the National Assembly. The monarch also set a date for the new election — February 2.
