Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite told journalists that EU leaders had not managed to persuade Ukraine to sign the agreement

VILNIUS, November 29. /ITAR-TASS/. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich is currently holding meetings with European Union representatives as expectations rose that a Spring date may be declared for Ukraine's Association Agreement to be signed with the bloc of nations.

Word of the meeting came in an official statement from the EU Eastern Partnership meeting in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.

Participants at the meeting are Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Arbuzov, Ukrainian Finance Minister Yuriy Kolobkov and European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule.

Yesterday, at the first summit day, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite told journalists that EU leaders had not managed to persuade Ukraine to sign the agreement.

She noted that the Ukrainian president had suggested holding trilateral talks with the European Union, Ukraine and Russia though EU officials had already declined that proposal.

“The EU member states have listened once again to the Ukrainian president’s arguments," Grybauskaite said. For the most part, the president talked not about the agreement and its signing, but about the existing economic problems Ukraine had to deal with. The president wanted the EU and Russia to tackle these problems together.”

Yanukovich is also due to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
