Sworn-in Georgian President Georgy Margvelashvili issued his first presidential decree

TBILISI, November 17, /ITAR-TASS/. Sworn-in Georgian President Georgy Margvelashvili issued his first presidential decree, instructing Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili and the country’s government that the latter heads to perform their duties temporarily until a new government is formed, representatives of the new Georgian presidential administration told reporters on Sunday.

According to the Georgian Constitution, the country’s government headed by the prime minister is relieved of their powers after the newly elected president takes the office, but will perform temporarily their duties until a new government is formed. On Sunday, after the inauguration of the new president, the government filed resignation to the parliament, and the president instructed the same government to perform their functions temporarily until the parliament approves a new Cabinet.

According to preliminary reports, on Monday or Tuesday the parliamentary majority, which is made of members of the ruling coalition Georgian Dream, will nominate Irakly Garibashvili as a candidate for prime minister to the president. After the president approves this candidacy Garibashvili will present a new composition of the government for approval to the parliament. It is expected that on Wednesday, November 20, the parliament will begin the debates on this issue and a new Cabinet and a new government are expected to be approved by the supreme legislature before the end of this week.

As for incumbent Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, he stated in the last few months that he would quit the post after the inauguration of the new president and will take a job in the public sector. On November 24, Ivanishvili will state about his resignation from the post of the honorary chairman of the party and will quit politics at a congress of the Ivanishvili-created party Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia (the party is included in the coalition Georgian Dream, which is made of six parties).

On November 2, 2013, the coalition Georgian Dream decided at Ivanishvili’s initiative to nominate the candidacy of incumbent Interior Minister Irakly Garibashvili for the post of prime minister. According to the new reading of the Constitution, a party or a union, which has a majority of seats in the parliament (Georgian Dream in this case), nominates a candidate for premiership.
