Over 1.5 million Russian citizens visit Thailand every year

MOSCOW, November 15, 16:00 /ITAR-TASS/. Russia’s Federal Tourism Agency (Rostourism) has voiced concern about frequent road traffic accidents involving Russian tourists and intends to insist Thai colleagues ensure their security.

“Rostourism urges the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports to include a provision on security of Russian tourists in the agreement between the governments of the Russian Federation and the Kingdom of Thailand. Unfortunately, our proposals have been rejected,” Rostourism’s press service reported.

Over 1.5 million Russian citizens visit Thailand every year.

A bus with Russian tourists overturned near the Thai resort city of Pattaya on Friday, November 8. According to preliminary information, four Russian people have been heavily injured.

Medical assistance has been provided to all injured persons, the Russian Consulate-General in Thailand said.

Earlier, the Russian Embassy in Bangkok told Itar-Tass four Russian citizens had received severe injuries in a road traffic accident in Thailand.

However, the embassy’s staff said the injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

“Four persons had concussions, slashes and wounds. Previously, it was reported that five people had been injured gravely. Fortunately, reports have not been confirmed,” the embassy’s press attachй, Alexander Mrykin, said.

Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry’s spokeswoman, Irina Rossius, said the ministry was ready to send an aircraft to Thailand to provide aid to Russian citizens injured in the road traffic accident.

“Now all problems are being coordinated. Traumas received by Russian injured persons are being specified. Insurance problems are being discussed as well,” Rossius said.
