WARSAW, November 13, 13:00 /ITAR-TASS/. Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has apologised to Russia for riots that took place on Monday at the building of the Russian embassy at which hooligans threw flares, firecrackers and bottles. Komorowski offered his apologies in a local radio station broadcast.

“I should apologise on behalf of the Polish government,” he said, calling the nationalist riots at the RF embassy “an absolute scandal that cannot be justified in any way.” “We can only apologise,” the Polish leader added.

According to him, the Independence March considerably harmed Poland’s image in the world.

The Polish Foreign Ministry for its part has prepared an official note. The ministry spokesman Marcin Wojciechowski said it would be handed to the Russian side in the coming hours. “In this document we express deep regret over what has happened. We hope that this will make it possible to settle the matter,” he said.

On November 11 — Poland’s Independence Day, thousands of nationalists marched through downtown Warsaw. Their Independence Day march turned violent. Mass fighting and clashes with police occurred during the action. Marching past the Russian embassy building, hooligans from among the march participants set ablaze a guard booth at the embassy gates, threw flares, firecrackers and bottles at the building and tried to climb the fence. In connection with these events, the Russian Foreign Ministry demanded an apology from Poland and a thorough investigation of the incident. Polish police have detained three suspects.
