MOSCOW, April 19 (Itar-Tass) - WWII Japanese shells have been found on Russia’s Far Eastern Island of Sakhalin, spokesman for the Eastern military district Alexander Gordeyev told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“Artillery shells of the Japanese make, presumably of the Second World War period, were found near a highway linking Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Sinegorsk after a snow slide,” he said. “Specialists have been sent to the area to establish the munitions’ type and to decide how to dispose of them.”

According to the spokesman, a special environment monitoring post has been installed in the vicinity. “There is no threat to the local population or to the environment,” he added.
