WWII Japanese shells found on Russia’s Sakhalin after snow slide

Specialists have been sent to the area to establish the munitions’ type and to decide how to dispose of them

MOSCOW, April 19 (Itar-Tass) - WWII Japanese shells have been found on Russia’s Far Eastern Island of Sakhalin, spokesman for the Eastern military district Alexander Gordeyev told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“Artillery shells of the Japanese make, presumably of the Second World War period, were found near a highway linking Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Sinegorsk after a snow slide,” he said. “Specialists have been sent to the area to establish the munitions’ type and to decide how to dispose of them.”

According to the spokesman, a special environment monitoring post has been installed in the vicinity. “There is no threat to the local population or to the environment,” he added.
