MOSCOW, March 20 (Itar-Tass) – Russian detectives are investigating the details of the death of the Russian spouses from the Leningrad Region at a Egyptian hotel, the Russian Investigation Committee told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

The spouses from the Leningrad Region, Marina and Andrei Khmelevs, died during their vacations in Egypt, their son Pavel, 24, was hospitalized. According to the preliminary reports, the Russian tourists were drinking alcoholic beverages at a hotel in Hurghada. On March 7, the head of the family died, his wife died already a day later, on March 9. Survived son Pavel was feeling sick onboard the airplane during a flight back to Russia. “The young man was brought urgently to a hospital in St. Petersburg, the methanol was found in his blood at the hospital. He is in consciousness now, but his eyesight is strongly damaged, in the view of the doctors, he will remain a disabled person for the rest of his life,” a source in the Russian Investigation Committee said.

The bodies of Russian tourists have been kept in Egypt for more than a week, the source said. “On the resolution of the medics from Cairo, a heart attack caused the death of the spouses. The relatives believe that the Khmelevs were poisoned,” the source said.

“The investigating department of the Russian Investigation Committee in the Leningrad Region is conducting a procedural inquiry over the reports of the death of the Russian spouses. During the inquiry the detectives will investigate all the details of the death case. Upon the results of the inquiry a procedural decision will be taken,” the source underlined.
