Ex-president of Paraguay to be held in pretrial detention
Santiago Pena will be confined at the headquarters of the presidential security regiment, Ultima Hora reports
BUENOS AIRES, November 8. /TASS/. Judge Humberto Otazu ordered the pretrial detention of former Paraguayan President Santiago Pena, who faces charges over the collapse of Ueno bank that left the accounts of approximately 3 million customers frozen, the Ultima Hora newspaper reports.
According to the news outlet, Pena will be held in custody at the headquarters of the presidential security regiment.
The Prosecutor's Office previously charged the ex-president with "breach of trust and management of property for personal interest." The investigation involves potential irregularities regarding the deposition of state and pension funds in Ueno bank, and the oversight of the banking institution.
On November 6, senators unanimously approved Pena's impeachment due to the Ueno bank scandal. He was detained immediately following his resignation from office.
