NEW YORK, November 6. /TASS/. Following their gain of control over both houses of the US Congress the Democrats may intensify their opposition to US President Donald Trump’s territorial ambitions concerning Greenland, military expert Troy Bouffard, of the Center for Arctic Security and Resilience at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, has told TASS.

"Democratic control of Congress will likely increase political resistance to any renewed attempt to pursue territorial acquisition or unilateral coercive measures. However, that should not be confused with opposition to the strategic importance of Greenland itself. Its geographic position is central to North American defense, Arctic surveillance, early warning, and the security architecture of the North Atlantic," he said.

Bouffard argues that "the United States does not require sovereignty over Greenland to achieve many of its most important security objectives." He believes that "cooperative defense arrangements, reliable access, infrastructure investments, and sustained engagement with Denmark and Greenland can provide substantial operational advantages without introducing unnecessary political friction within NATO."

In September, Trump, along with the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland - Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen - signed an agreement regarding the transfer of responsibilities for the security of the Arctic island to Washington. In late October, while speaking at a rally for his Republican supporters, Trump claimed that the Danish authorities had agreed to place Greenland under US control. Furthermore, he posted an AI-generated image on the social media platform Truth Social depicting Greenland as an American airbase. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen characterized Trump’s statements as an attempt by the White House to secure a victory for the Republicans in the midterm elections.
