According to Canan Tercan, Israeli pressure on the US administration influenced its decision to launch the war against Iran, which weakened the American president's domestic standing

ISTANBUL, November 6. /TASS/. Democrats, who won a majority in the US Congress in the November 3 midterm elections, will almost certainly step up pressure on President Donald Trump's administration over its Middle East policy, Turkish international security expert Canan Tercan told a TASS correspondent.

"It is clear that, having secured a majority in Congress, Democrats will increase pressure on the Trump administration over its Middle East policy. In opposing the war with Iran, they will try to limit new military operations and the military budget," said Tercan, who heads the IAU Politics Academy at Istanbul Aydin University.

According to the expert, Israeli pressure on the US administration influenced its decision to launch the war against Iran, which weakened the American president's domestic standing. "[Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's opposition to Trump's peace initiatives for Gaza and Israel's continued military intervention in Syria's affairs show that the two leaders' interests in the Middle East do not align," Tercan noted.

"An influential group among the Democrats who won a majority in Congress in the elections seeks to end support for Israel entirely. The new Congress could adopt a resolution ending or reducing military support for Israel, giving Trump an opportunity to shift responsibility for relations with the Jewish state onto Congress. A peaceful settlement in Gaza could also be placed on the agenda," the Turkish expert believes.
