LONDON, November 5. /TASS/. Reuters has identified five areas of US foreign policy that could change in the wake of the Democratic Party’s victory in the congressional midterm elections.

Democrats, who won control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, intend to curb the Trump administration’s war and spending powers, the agency reported. During the campaign, they argued that Republicans had allowed the administration to assume Congress’s constitutional authority to declare war and allocate federal funds.

One potential change is curtailing the war with Iran. Democrats could reduce defense spending or block appointments to pressure Trump into seeking congressional authorization to continue hostilities.

Support for Ukraine is also expected to grow. Democrats could put a new aid package for Kiev to a vote, Reuters noted.

They could also restrict or suspend military assistance to Israel and use budgetary leverage to curb military spending and reinstate foreign aid blocked by the administration.

Another area could be greater scrutiny of US policy in Latin America, including Washington’s actions in Venezuela and sanctions against Cuba, the agency reported.

The US held its midterm elections on November 3. Americans elected 35 of the 100 senators and all 435 members of the House of Representatives. Gubernatorial elections were also held in 36 states.

According to the latest US media projections, Democrats are expected to secure majorities in both chambers of the new Congress. Republicans currently control the Senate and the House.
